The Story

Call Me Human

Call Me Human: the story

I

Shot Down

Once upon a time, there was a human, far out among the stars. Then a hit out of nowhere. Someone fired on his ship. It breaks apart, goes down and crashes on a planet he has never heard of.

That human is you. You survive the crash. Your memory doesn't. You no longer know who you are, where you come from or who shot you out of the sky.

That's what Call Me Human is about: finding a way off this planet, making it back home and finding out who you are. And since you've forgotten everything, a new you takes shape along the way, formed by the adventure you live.

II

Stranded

You wake up next to your burning wreck. Red sand, turquoise water, crystals glinting in the sun and plants you have never seen before. You don't know your name, where you come from or why you are here.

Only one thing is clear right away: you don't belong here. If you can get power back to the ship, maybe you'll find out who you are and how to get home.

Game scene: the hero at the crash site, the wreck at the top right, lava nearby.

III

M.E.M.O.

M.E.M.O. after the crash, his treads torn off.

You are not completely alone. M.E.M.O., a little robot who was on board with you, reaches you over the radio on your wristwatch. He has a dry, stubborn sense of humor, is a bit cheeky and your only piece of home.

Memo took a beating in the crash too, his treads and his memory. Bit by bit, you put him back together. Memo never lies. But sometimes he goes quiet right where you'd like to know more.

IV

Call Me Human

You are not alone on this planet. A people lives here who speak your language. They ask you what your name is. But you don't have one.

So you tell them: "Call me Human."

Everything goes quiet. To them, "Human" is an insult. Why that word sounds so bad to them is something you only learn bit by bit. One thing is certain: you are not the first human to come here.

The people of Veyl: many villagers side by side, in light robes.
The people of Veyl: pointed ears and blue gray to turquoise skin. They believe in NUAM, and NUAM stands for love.
A village on Veyl: clay houses, market stalls, trees and water between red rocks.
One of their villages. A human isn't welcome here, at least not at first.

V

A Restless Planet

This planet is called Veyl, and it can't find peace. The volcanoes have woken up, smoke hangs over the land, ash poisons the water, and the nights are more dangerous than the days. The people believe the planet is alive and can feel. The longer you stay, the more you sense there might be something to it.

The parts your ship needs aren't just lying in the sand. You only get them once people trust you.

A region on Veyl: rock plateaus above a lava chasm, a wooden bridge crosses the glow, the hero stands next to a steaming pool.

VI

From Stranger to Friend

It's a long way from stranger to honored citizen. You explore deserts, steppes and abandoned mines, build yourself tools, a camp and a raft, face creatures that aren't happy to see you, and help people who don't really like you. Every deed changes how they see you.

There is someone who is especially cold toward you. And there is someone who loves to show off and reliably ends up flat on their face. With every step that brings you closer to leaving, you grow a little more attached to this place.

VII

Seven Main Planets

Veyl is only the beginning. Your little ship can't make it all the way home. The main questline takes you across seven main planets, and each has its own people, its own story and its own way of being explored: jungle, islands full of water, ice, crystal and lava.

On top of that, there are more than 30 side planets with dungeons, side missions and space stations to explore, and more keep coming. The planets come in different sizes. Depending on its size, you'll spend about 1 to 20 hours on a main planet, and on a side planet anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours, depending on the task and the questline. You'll return to many planets again and again, because the questline sends you across the whole universe. Later on, DLCs are planned that will expand the universe even further.

Your ship grows with you, from a burning wreck to something much bigger. And along the way you find traces of a past you can't remember, and the question of who shot at you and why.

VIII

Many Worlds, Many Biomes

Every planet has many biomes, and each one tells its own story. That comes with a questline where you make friends with the locals and take on all kinds of missions. Sometimes you carry a package to another planet and deliver it there. Sometimes you defeat a boss. Sometimes you take care of something for someone who needs you.

It's not just "do this, defeat that." You can expect lots of creativity, variety, a story that's really told and many different game mechanics. On top of that, there are lots of dungeons with lots of tasks.

The whole game is built around exploration, adventure and variety. And wherever you like it and want to stay a while, you set up a base and gather your resources there.

Your Adventure, Your Way

Call Me Human is an action RPG adventure, and you decide what kind of adventure it becomes.

Want to fight? Jump into battles and boss fights with swords, ranged weapons and magic abilities. Want to explore? Drive vehicles across the planets and fly your spaceship from world to world, with the occasional space battle along the way. Love dungeons and quests? There are plenty of them, full of puzzles, treasure and stories. Or play it cozy: build your base, farm, craft and make yourself at home.

The hero paddles a raft through a turquoise lagoon between palm trees, red rocks and crystals.

Every path leads to your goal. You don't have to pick just one, mix it all up however you like.

That's why there are three difficulty levels. Cozy is for everyone who wants less fighting and more exploring and building. Adventure is a colorful mix of cozy, discovery and combat. Survival is for those who like to do it all and don't mind running into creatures of the night, with a lot more enemies. You can switch between all difficulty levels at any time.

And once you've played through the game your way, Hardcore mode unlocks: you only get one life, and if you make it through, a special reward awaits.

The hero rides a quad bike through the desert.

You can build a house anywhere in the game, because there are building spots everywhere. Add to that a crafting system, a talent system and lots of weapons and armor. Our goal: at least 200 hours of playtime.

Inside a house: stove, bed, workbench, table and chest.
A house by the water, with a garden and a dock.
A house with a garden between red rocks, crystals and a waterfall.
You can build and farm on other planets too.

The Journey to Yourself

You want to go home. That's the plan, and it keeps you going. But along the way something else happens: you become someone. Through what you do, through those you help and through the choices you make.

Over the course of the game, you give yourself a name and decide who you are. Lots of secrets and one great mystery are waiting for you, but we won't spoil them here.

It's a story about identity, belonging and love, a movie you live and help write yourself. Maybe in the end you'll find that home isn't a point on a star map, but wherever you are, what you make of it and what you love.

So what happens next? Will you find your mothership? What happens on Earth when you get back, if you get back? That stays a secret. We won't reveal it here, you'll find out for yourself in the game.

Life is a story, and the story shapes you.
